Why do I want to install tiles?

Ask yourself why you want to install tiles as opposed to other types of flooring such as vinyl, carpet, carpet squares, cork tiles, wooden flooring, etc. These other types of flooring have their advantages and disadvantages, and will have different implications while they are in use.

One reason for choosing tiles is that they have the lowest recycling cost of any flooring. Assuming they are laid correctly and nothing goes wrong with the floor, the installation should be the only major cost. Other types of flooring require maintenance; for example, a wooden floor will probably need re-sanding and new polyurethane after 3 to 5 years. Vinyl floors also wear out. Tiles are the only acknowledged "life time" flooring.
